What is Lipitor?

Lipitor is a medication prescribed to lower cholesterol. Lipitor is manufactured and sold by Pfizer and the FDA approved the drug in December 1996. It is prescribed as daily tablets in 10 mg to 80 mg doses. The generic version of Lipitor is called atorvastatin, and it is a member of the statin class of hypolipidemics. Over 29 million people in the United States have been prescribed Lipitor tablets according to Pfizer.

Like other statin medications, Lipitor prevents an enzyme in the liver from creating low density lipids (LDLs). LDLs are a type of cholesterol that blocks arteries (also known as “bad cholesterol”). Statins are prescribed to prevent the production of LDL and reduce the user’s risk of developing heart disease.

FDA Warning: Lipitor Tied to Increased Diabetes Risk

The FDA issued a safety warning on February 28, 2012, requiring label changes for Lipitor to include the increased risk of high blood sugar and that people who take the statin face an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Other manufacturers of cholesterol-lowering statins were also required to comply with the new guidelines.
