Prozac & Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when vertebrae overlying the spinal cord do not fully form and remain open. This allows for a portion of the spinal cord to protrude through the opening in the bones and can result in permanent spinal damage.

Studies have suggested that taking Prozac while pregnant may increase the risk of giving birth to a baby with spina bifida. A number of lawsuits have already been filed against Eli Lilly alleging that the company should have disclosed the increased risk of spina bifida and other injuries resulting from use of Prozac during pregnancy.
