Dancer and organizer Caeli La (Michaela Higgins) has come forward to defend herself against defamation lawsuits filed by electronic musician Space Jesus, Jasha Tull, and his parents.

Gibbs Law Group and co-counsel Greenberg Gross are proud to represent Caeli as she tells her story and speaks out against this attempt to discredit her and silence her. On April 28, 2021, we filed motions to dismiss the defamation lawsuits against Caeli. Together, we can hold sexual abusers accountable and keep our communities safe.

Caeli’s story in the news

Space Jesus tries to silence sexual assault survivors, files defamation lawsuit

Content warning: description of sexual assault

In early June 2016, Caeli and Jasha met up after an electronic music festival they were both booked to perform at. In Caeli’s response to the lawsuits, she explains that what started as kissing almost immediately escalated into rape when Jasha penetrated Caeli without warning, without protection, and without her consent. Though she rationalized it away at the time, our motion to dismiss explains Caeli later learned he had a pattern of disregarding the consent of his sexual partners. As detailed in our filing, Jasha later sexually assaulted Caeli in front of his manager and close friends, and he gaslighted Caeli into apologizing for her reactions to his verbal and emotional abuse.

When Caeli created the Instagram page @evidenceagainstspacejesus, dozens of people reached out with their own experiences of sexual abuse and violence from Jasha.

On March 5, 2021, Space Jesus and his parents filed defamation lawsuits against Caeli, which we allege in our response was an attempt to silence her. Unconscionably, his team served her with the lawsuits on March 8, International Women’s Day. Gibbs Law Group, working with co-counsel Greenberg Gross, countered with a motion to dismiss the defamation lawsuits on April 28, 2021, and continues to help Caeli speak out about the sexual assault she experienced.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

Caeli stood up to these attempts to silence her and filed responses to the defamation lawsuits in April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (#SAAM). This month is a time to increase awareness about sexual violence and to encourage people across our communities to raise their voices in support of survivors.

  • Around 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted;
  • Nearly half of all transgender people in the United States have experienced sexual assault in their lifetime; and
  • Up to 63% of sexual assaults are never reported, making it one of the most underreported crimes.

The term “sexual assault” is an umbrella term that includes all of the following:

  • Rape
  • Molestation
  • Unwanted sexual contact of any other form
  • Sexual harassment
  • Incest
  • Child Sexual Abuse
  • Sexual violence, even with an intimate partner
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Human trafficking
  • Voyeurism

By supporting survivors and removing the stigma they face, we can prevent and ultimately end sexual assault.
