Contact information, Social Security numbers, and medical information compromised in Tandem data breach

On March 16, 2020, Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. announced that it had experienced a data breach in January of 2020. The breach may have compromised customer’s Social Security numbers, clinical data regarding customers’ diabetes therapy, information related to their use of Tandem’s products, such as insulin pumps, and other personal information.

Tandem Diabetes Care Data Breach News: Insulin Pump Maker Hacked

Tandem Diabetes Care says on January 17, 2020, it learned that an unauthorized user gained access to an employee email account through a “phishing” incident. As a result, the unauthorized user was able to access several employee email accounts over a span of three days.

In a letter to customers affected by the breach, Tandem Diabetes Care disclosed that the hacker may have had access to contact information, Social Security numbers, and personal medical data.

The president and CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care was quoted in a press release as saying,

We take the protection of our customer data very seriously, and regrettably, we did not meet the high standard we set to prevent this type of phishing attack from occurring… We apologize this incident took place and are continuing to invest in cyber security and data protection safeguards.
