Gibbs Law Group Attorneys Investigate Foster Farms Chicken and Salmonella Outbreak
November 1, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The law firm of Gibbs Law Group LLP announced today that it is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against Foster Farms after its chicken has been linked to 362 reports of salmonella infections across 21 states. These infections are caused by outbreak strains of Salmonella Heidelberg that are resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the strains’ antibiotic resistance may be associated with an increased risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals.
Federal authorities at the CDC and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) began investigating the outbreak in October 2013 after hundreds of people reported falling ill after consuming contaminated poultry that originated from a Foster Farms facility. The affected products include raw chicken sold by Foster Farms, as well as fully cooked rotisserie chicken products produced by Foster Farms and sold at Costco stores. On October 7, 2013, the USDA issued a Public Health Alert regarding the salmonella outbreak associated with Foster Farms chicken. Foster Farms has not recalled any of the contaminated chicken.
Illness from a salmonella infection usually lasts 4-7 days. Over one third of the people who have reported falling ill during the recent outbreak have required hospitalization as a result of their illness.
“Consumers expect companies to implement and follow safe practices in handling their products,” stated attorney Eric Gibbs of Gibbs Law Group. “When hundreds of consumers fall ill as a result of eating a company’s contaminated food, consumers expect those responsible to address the injuries they may have caused.”
Gibbs Law Group LLP is currently investigating reports of people who fell ill after eating Foster Farms chicken.
