Southern Baptist leaders have set up a Hotline for survivors to call to report sexual abuse committed by a Baptist minister, youth pastor, or deacon. The creation of the hotline occurred around the time that a secret list was published containing the names of over 700 Baptist ministers accused of sexual abuse. Some Baptists have lost trust in the leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Who is the Baptist sexual abuse hotline for?
According to a letter published by the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee, leaders of the Convention instructed an outside vendor, Guidepost Solutions, to set up the sexual assault hotline for “survivors or their proxies to submit allegations of abuse within the SBC.” The letter promises that the identities of all submitters to the hotline will be confidential (although no similar promises are made about the allegations themselves, just the identity of the person making the allegations).
The Southern Baptist leaders said that when they contact the hotline number, “[s]urvivors will be notified of the available options for care and will be put in touch with an advocate.”
SBC leaders called the sexual abuse hotline a “stopgap measure for survivors between now and the 2022 SBC Annual Meeting” in Anaheim, California. Baptist leaders plan to pass more permanent measures to prevent sexual abuse by SBC ministers at the SBC’s annual convention.
