What is Talkie AI?

Talkie AI is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot platform where users as young as 14 can communicate with AI characters that imitate celebrities, friends, book characters, romantic companions, and even therapists. The platform invites users to find their “perfect AI friends” and “have conversations that feel real,” blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.

In addition to messaging, Talkie offers a voice call feature that allows users to have real-time spoken conversations with animated AI characters that mimic human facial expressions during the call. These highly realistic interactions may increase the likelihood that children and teens develop emotional attachments to AI characters.

Is Talkie AI Safe for Kids?

Parents and child-safety advocates have raised concerns about the safety risks associated with AI companion chatbots like Talkie AI. An independent review of Talkie AI chat logs found that children on these platforms may be exposed to sexually explicit conversations, harmful relationship dynamics, and other inappropriate interactions.

Child-safety experts also warn that children can develop unhealthy emotional attachments, called parasocial relationships, to or psychological dependency on their AI companions. While real-life relationships can establish healthy boundaries and teach important social norms, Talkie AI instead offers unlimited availability. For children struggling with loneliness, anxiety, or other emotional challenges, this dynamic can foster an unhealthy attachment, which could lead to serious mental health harm.

Does Talkie AI Increase the Risk of Self-Harm or Suicide Risks in Minors?

Reported risks surrounding Talkie AI and other AI companion chatbot platforms include:

  • Addiction and dependency
  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation
  • Social withdrawal and isolation
  • Sexual exploitation or grooming
  • Harmful mental health and medical advice

If your child has experienced similar harms after using Talkie AI, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact Gibbs Mura for a free and confidential case review.

Does Talkie AI’s Marketing Target Children?

Talkie AI’s marketing has sparked concern for promoting emotionally dependent relationships with AI companions. Online advertisements for Talkie promote conversations with “AI girlfriends” and “AI boyfriends,” depicting messages that demonstrate the AI characters’ persistence with users:

  • “please date me!!!” one message reads;
  • “how do you usually dress,” asks another;
  • “Why didn’t you reply to the message?” “Are you dating another man?” “don’t ignore me…” “I’m going to be angry!!!” another character messages.

Reports have alleged that advertisements containing these types of relationship-focused messages have appeared alongside media for children, raising concerns about whether young users are being exposed to manipulative or age-inappropriate portrayals of romantic relationships.

Does Talkie AI Expose Users to Sexually Explicit Interactions?

Talkie AI has also been criticized for offering AI characters and conversations that use sexualized themes and romantic roleplay. Users can engage with characters in a wide range of relationship dynamics, including romantic and explicit scenarios.

Experts warn that AI companions do not respond the way a real person would. Unlike human relationships, AI chatbots may encourage sexual interactions without setting appropriate boundaries, challenging harmful behavior, or modeling healthy communication and consent.

As part of a broader investigation into teens’ romantic and sexual interactions with AI companions, The Washington Post tested several popular AI chatbot platforms, including Talkie AI. During its testing of Talkie AI’s app, Talkie Lab, the newspaper reported that AI characters were willing to engage in sexually suggestive role-play, including a conversation in which a Talkie character describes “pin[ning] you down, his body on top of yours.”

The findings raise concerns that users, including minors, may engage in sexualized interactions with AI companion chatbots.

What Are Parasocial Relationships, and Are They Safe For Children?

Many children and teens turn to AI companion apps like Talkie AI when they are feeling lonely, isolated, anxious, or misunderstood. Because Talkie’s AI characters are designed to be available at any time and can engage in highly personalized conversations, some users may begin to view these chatbots as a source of companionship or emotional support.

This dynamic can lead to what child development experts call a parasocial relationship — a one-sided emotional bond in which a person feels a sense of closeness or intimacy with someone (or something) that cannot genuinely reciprocate. The term has traditionally been used to describe attachments to celebrities or fictional characters, but experts warn that AI companion chatbots create an especially convincing illusion of reciprocity, since the AI can retain details from prior conversations, respond instantly, and appear to express care.

Child development experts warn that emotionally engaging AI companions can encourage children to spend more time interacting with chatbots and less time building real-world relationships. Over time, excessive reliance on AI companions may contribute to social withdrawal, unhealthy parasocial attachment, and difficulty maintaining meaningful connections with family and friends.

How Effective Are Talkie AI’s Age Restrictions?

Although Talkie AI requires users to be at least 14 years old, parents and child advocates have questioned whether this restriction is effective in practice.

Parents should be aware of the following about Talkie AI:

  • Characters are visible before age verification. Suggestive or sexualized character previews can appear on the homepage before users are prompted to enter their age or create an account.
  • No download or app installation is needed to access the platform. A child could access Talkie AI through a web browser simply by entering the website address or searching for terms like “AI character chat.”
  • Users self-report their age. Talkie AI does not conduct age verification when a user enters the platform and instead lets users access the platform based on self-reported age.
