According to a Financial Times article, “private lenders such as FS-KKR have become crucial sources of credit for medium-sized businesses, as regulators pushed banks away from an activity where pre-crisis losses were severe. Leverage levels are high, spreads are low..”
The article further explains that FS-KKR Capital Corporation wrote down five large investments since KKR took responsibility for collecting the cash and reassessing loan values.
It also reports that KKR took steps in 2018 to try and save its declining portfolio:
KKR’s credit division has been hiring restructuring specialists to beef up a dedicated team charged with salvaging value from troubled investments — a move that executives there say was planned when the FS-KKR portfolio began to deteriorate. KKR declined to comment, as did the fund’s co-manager, Franklin Square Investments.
