What is the GM Engine Failure Lawsuit Investigation About?
Gibbs Mura’s award-winning auto defect attorneys filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors for allegedly selling vehicles prone to early and catastrophic engine failure and failing to disclose a dangerous and widespread defect in the L87 6.2L V8 engine. The lawsuit seeks to compensate consumers who have purchased one of the following recalled vehicles with model years between 2021-2024:
- Chevrolet Suburban
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- GMC Sierra 1500
- Cadillac Escalade
- Cadillac Escalade ESV
- GMC Yukon
- GMC Yukon XL
Recall notices are expected to go out to GM vehicle owners in early June 2025. At this point, nearly 600,000 GM vehicles are confirmed to be affected by the L87 engine defect, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Engine failure can occur without warning.

What GM engine is being recalled?
2021-2024 model years for the following GM vehicles will be impacted by the L87 engine failure recall:
- Chevrolet Suburban
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- GMC Sierra 1500
- Cadillac Escalade
- Cadillac Escalade ESV
- GMC Yukon
- GMC Yukon XL
On April 24, 2025, GM issued this year’s largest recall on nearly 600,000 vehicles equipped with its L87 engine.
Symptoms of this engine problem may include unusual engine noises such as knocking, banging, or ticking, illumination of the check engine light, and you may find that your vehicle suffers from high RPMs, hesitation, abnormal shifting, reduced propulsion, or failure to start. Total engine failure may also occur.
Consumer notices are expected to go out on June 9th.
Why is the GM engine failure recall being investigated?
The GM engine recall follows an investigation opened by U.S. auto safety regulators (NHTSA) this past January, after receiving GM L87 engine customer complaints of early engine failures with no warning.
In a Safety Recall Report, GM decided that certain GM vehicles equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 gas engine may have manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components that can lead to engine damage and engine failure, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Why should I consider a lawsuit?
The cost of repairing or replacing the engine can easily amount to well over $10,000 if not covered by warranty, and those covered by warranty may have a difficult time locating a replacement engine. Given how widespread the issue is, according to public reports and industry insiders, GM lacks sufficient supply of replacement engines to meet demand.
Additionally, owners of affected vehicles could face reduced resale value or higher fuel costs, which GM’s recall does not address.
Our lawsuit seeks compensation for impacted vehicle owners and to hold GM accountable for its delayed recall that has left owners at significant risk of bodily injury and have burdened them with increased fuel costs and unexpected out-of-pocket repair costs.
