What is the GM Engine Failure Lawsuit Investigation About?
We are investigating a potential class action lawsuit against General Motors for allegedly selling vehicles prone to early and catastrophic engine failure. The potential lawsuit would seek to compensate consumers who have purchased one of the following recalled vehicles with model years between 2021-2024: Suburban, Silverado, Tahoe, Sierra, Cadillac Escalade, and Yukon.

What GM engine is being recalled?
On April 24, 2025, GM issued this year’s largest recall on nearly 600,000 vehicles equipped with its L87 engine. 2021-2024 model years for the following vehicles will be impacted:
- GMC Yukon
- GMC Sierra
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- Chevrolet Suburban
- Cadillac Escalade
Symptoms of this engine problem can include unusual engine noises such as knocking, banging, or ticking, illumination of the check engine light, and you may find that your vehicle suffers from high RPMs, hesitation, abnormal shifting, or failure to start. Total engine failure may also occur.
Consumer notices are not expected to go out until June 9th, but the recall notice is available to view online.
Why is the GM engine failure recall being investigated?
The GM engine recall follows an investigation opened by U.S. auto safety regulators (NHTSA) this past January, after receiving GM L87 engine customer complaints of early failures with no warning.
The GM L87 engine recall may result from defects in the manufacturing or design of connecting rod or crankshaft engine components which may cause the engines to seize, lose power and stall while driving.
Should I consider a lawsuit?
The cost of repairing or replacing the engine can easily amount to well over $10,000 if not covered by warranty, and those covered by warranty may have a difficult time locating a replacement engine. Given how widespread the issue is, GM has struggled to keep up with the demand for new L87 engines and many customers are waiting weeks until a replacement engine becomes available.
